Despite having a few flights in the Bell, I have just realised I am missing something - the sounds made by the skids on landing. Even a a good hover and gentle landing should get you a slight metallic crunch on tarmac and as for auto rotation, run on landings were frequent, so the sound of skids sliding on tarmac are noticeable by their absence. Even on grass, a run-on should be audible.
Damage to the skids? Of course, but there were sacrificial stainless steel skid shoes fitted which could be easily replaced when the heli was on its ground handling wheels.
